Our saga begins with a trip to the State Fair of Texas on Thursday, October 9, 2008. A seemingly innocent adventure. Brushing elbows with bohemian types. Eating food items contributing to the growing obesity problem in our nation. Experiencing generally one of the biggest cultural events in the state of Texas.

My old nemesis, Big Tex...

It's one of our favorite times of the year. It was prior to Texas-OU weekend. Lots of people showing their team pride made for a delicious amount of people watching. As always, we made our way to the petting zoo to see and feed the animals to enjoy the earthy smells and to have an excuse to wash our hands thoroughly. A giraffe, some zebra, an American bison AND an African water buffalo, innumerable goats, some half-kangaroo-kalf-donkey jackalope thingies, some sheep and, as picured some donkeys. Did I mention the hand washing?

Of course, the food is always the best part. This year the big food iten was "Chicken Fried Bacon." I can't tell you how it tasted since. It looked weird. And don't try arguing the point that bacon is generally friend and pork is pork and therefore not chicken. Folks were lined up big time to feast on this Fair delicacy.
We stuck to the classic Corny Dogs and, some really delicious funnel cakes. In retrospect, we think it was the funnel cake the did it

Again, we're pretty sure it was the funnel cake that did it...
